Previous week we studied skeleton; this week we go from inside out and study what’s right under skin; muscles!
Drawing muscle is very chaotic, maybe more than skeleton. Why do we study it: because they are right under our skin and we need to know the landmarks they cause on human figures in our drawings.
We are going to study how muscles appear on paper/canvas/whatever surface during some extension, straigtening, some movement or standing (e.g. calf, triceps and biceps look like during an activity). There can be a running figure in your drawing, or a woman with high heels and the round calf muscle, or any example you can think of. That’s why we study muscles.
There are voluntary and involuntary muscles and three types of muscles; cardiac, smooth and the one interests us is skeletal muscle which moves bones and other structures.
Here we have ‘8-head-hight’ again, 2 drawings of muscles from front and back. See how those muscles have long curvy feature.
I don’t mind writing all of those muscles names-we don’t really need the names-if you don’t intend to go deeper in anatomy; as names I only know biceps, triceps (upper arm), deltoid (shoulder) and achilles tendon from football news.
When you combine those informations with dynamic human figure drawing, or knowing the bones and muscles of a hand and drawing hand, you realize that you know how to draw it actually, every information falls into their places and what you draw looks better.
I know it looks chaotic or just hard to divide muscle groups (yet we study what’s on the surface) but what I advise you is to try to draw it over and over again.
I say it again for this study you can examine yourself. For the last two weeks I touched myself too much for skeleton and muscles 😀 Also you can examine examples about those landmarks of muscles and bones on a human you can check some fashion or whatever magazines there are probably some interesting poses and half naked figures. While examining those figures focus what’s inside the contours of human body; like skin tones around biceps, clavicle, adam’s apple etc.
